Higgins Outlasts Simmons To Become Oldest U.S. Women's Mid-Amateur Champion

Ann Arbor, Mich. – Joan Higgins, 52, of Glendora, Calif., defeated Lynn Simmons of Phoenix, Ariz., 1 up, Thursday to become the oldest winner of the U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship.

Championship Facts

U.S. Women's Mid-Amateur

PAR AND YARDAGE – Barton Hills Country Club will play at 6,189 yards with par of 36-36—72.

WHO CAN PLAY? – The U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship is open to female amateur players who will have reached their 25th birthday on or before Sept. 6, and who have a USGA Handicap Index not exceeding 9.4.

ARCHITECT – Donald Ross designed Barton Hills Country Club, which opened in 1924.

COURSE RATING AND SLOPE – The USGA Course RatingTM for Barton Hills C.C.’s championship set-up is 75.9 and the Slope Rating® is 138.

COURSE LAYOUT – The fairways will measure .450" in height. The intermediate rough will measure 1 inch with a width approximately 6 feet. Depending on density, the primary rough will stand at 2 inches h igh. The goal is to have the putting greens run 11 feet on the USGA Stimpmeter.

FREE ADMISSION – Admission for all six days of the championship is free of charge. Spectators are invited to walk the fairways behind the players, but no cameras are allowed during the days of competition.

SCHEDULE – Practice rounds will be held Sept. 4 (Thursday) and Sept. 5 (Friday). The starting field of 132 players will play two rounds of stroke play, with the low 64 scorers advancing to match play. The schedule is as follows:

  • Sept. 6 (Saturday) – First round of stroke play
  • Sept. 7(Sunday) – Second round of stroke play
  • Sept. 8 (Monday) – First round of match play
  • Sept. 9 (Tuesday) – Second and third rounds of match play
  • Sept. 10 (Wednesday) – Quarterfinal and semifinal rounds, match play
  • Sept. 11 (Thursday) – Final, match play (18 holes)
