Cindy Scholefield, 27, of Malibu, California defeated Pat Cornett of Corte Madera, California, 6 and 5, to win the first Women's Mid-Amateur Championship at Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Anne Sander, who had won the U.S. Senior Women's Amateur and reached the quarter-finals of the U.S. Women's Amateur earlier in the year, was the medalist at 157. She was defeated in the first round by Pat Milton, a semi-finalist at the Women's Amateur, 1 up. Scholefield and Cornett advanced through the match-play draw with ease. Scholefield was extended to the 16th hole only once on her way to the final.

She ousted Marilyn Horn of Mesa, Arizona, 4 and 2, in the semi-finals. Cornett's one tense match occurrred in the quarter-finals where she downed Lida Kinnicutt of Bloomfield, Connecticut, 3 and 2. She defeated Charlotte Wood of Beaumont, Texas, 5 and 3, to earn her spot in the final.

Scholefield birdied the first, third and sixth holes of final, eventually taking a four-hole lead at the turn. The 10th was halved, then Scholefield won the 11th and 12th with pars to go 6 up. The 13th was halved, giving Scholefield the championship. The USGA accepted 320 entries for the championship.
