Martha Lang, 35, of Geneva, Illinois, defeated Mary Hanyak of Boynton Beach, Florida, 4 and 3, in the final played at Amelia Island (Florida) Plantation. Lang, as Martha Jones, was medalist in the 1969 Girls' Junior Championship. For the second consecutive year, Anne Sander of Seattle, Washington, earned the qualifying medal.

She shot rounds of 74-74-148, four strokes better than Pat Cornett-Iker of Corte Madera, California, who placed second. Sander lost to Linda Olsen of Granada Hills, California, in the second round. Lang defeated Helen Kirkland of Colorado Springs, Colorado, 2 and 1 in the first round.

After two relatively easy matches in the second and third rounds, she was extended to the 19th hole before she eliminated Cornett-Iker. Lang defeated Pam Holcombe of Quincy, Illinois, 1 up, to reach the final. Hanyak's first serious challenge came in the third round when she defeated Sharon Keil of Sylvania, Ohio, in 20 holes.

She then ousted Olsen and Liz Rogers of Virginia Beach, Virginia, by 2-and-1 margins. Hanyak played the opening nine of the final in 46 to Lang's 36 and was four holes behind. She was not able to recover from that deficit and Lang won 4 and 3. The USGA accepted a record 347 entries for the championship.
