Sarah LeBrun Ingram became the first player to win two Women's
Mid-Amateur titles when she defeated Mary Burkhardt, of St. Augustine,
Fla., 2 and 1 in the final match at Rochester (Minn.) Golf and Country
Club.
Ingram, now 27, had also won this championship in 1991, in her
first years of eligibility, when it was held at Desert Highlands
Golf and Country Club.
In the final, Ingram won the second and third holes to grab an
early lead which she never relinquished. Burkhardt managed to trim
Ingram's lead to 1 up at the sixth, but Ingram countered with a
win on the seventh hole. She pushed her advantage to 3 up on the
11th hole and then hung on to close out the match, needing only
a bogey on the 17th hole to end it.
Ingram's play improved with each round. She advanced with lopsided
margins, including a 5 and 4 victory in her semifinal match. In
contrast, Burkhardt, a 1992 quarterfinalist, was extended to 20
holes in her semifinal match.
Ingram had narrowly lost earlier in the summer in the final of
the Women's Amateur, but there was not disappointment this time.
Before getting to match play, 1990 champion Carol Semple Thompson,
of Sewickley, Pa., set a medalist record of 141, a whopping 11 strokes
better than the 36-hole score of her nearest competitor. For the
fourth consecutive year this championship accepted a record number
