Houston’s Robin Burke Is Medalist At U.S. Women’s Mid-AmateurHilton Head, S.C. – Robin Burke, 41, of Houston, Texas, shot a 1-over-par 72 Sunday for a 36-hole total of even-par 142, giving her medalist honors by three strokes for the stroke play portion of the U.S. Women's Mid-Amateur Championship at Long Cove Club. The next lowest finisher in this age 25-and-older championship was defending champion Kathy Hartwiger, 37, of Birmingham, Ala., who finished at 74-145. Burke, Hartwiger and Virginia Grimes, 39, of Montgomery, Ala., who finished at 148, were the only three to finish under 150. For Burke, the 1997 Women's Amateur runner-up and the wife of 1956 Masters champion Jackie Burke Jr., it was a solid way to follow-up a 1-under-par 70, which tied for the low round of the championship. “Yesterday, I had good ball-striking and my putter saved me today,” said Burke, whose best Mid-Amateur finish was reaching the semifinals in 1998. “If I can get the combination going, that would be nice. But you never know. Match play is a different game.” Burke leads the top 64 finishers into the match play portion of the Championship starting Monday. The championship's final match is scheduled for Thursday. The cut for match play came at 19-over-par 161, with five golfers in a playoff for the last two spots Monday morning. Hartwiger, a five-title Alabama state champion and fresh off the 2003 State Match Play title, is playing well without feeling the pressure of high expectations. “My whole philosophy is, ‘I've already won,'” said Hartwiger. “It's taken a lot of the pressure off. My name will be on that trophy forever. I'd like to win again, but who knows?” “I lost my focus on the back nine,” said Hartwiger, who shot an uncharacteristically high 40 for the last nine holes after going 2 under through the first nine. “I started counting up my score before I was done, and counting never helps you. I was just a little tentative. I learned something today.” Other low finishers were Rebecca Halpern, 25, of Chicago, Ill., Sydney Moore, 41, of Menominee, Mich., and Amber Marsh, 34, of Greensboro, N.C., who each finished at 150. All seven past champions in the field advanced to match play. In addition to Hartwiger and Grimes, the 1998 champion, they are three-time champion Ellen Port (158), 42, of St. Louis, Mo. ; two-time winner Carol Semple Thompson (151), 54, of Sewickley, Pa.; Martha Lang (158), 50, of Mandeville, La.; Alissa (Herron) Super (159), 30, of Minneapolis, Minn.; and Marion Maney-McInerney (160), 41, Dedham, Mass. Local favorite Karen Feree, 53, who is a member at Long Cove and the former head golf professional there in the 1980s, rallied to finish 1-over-par on her last nine holes for a total of 160 (83-77) to advance into match play. “After I made double bogey on nine, I was stuck. I couldn't make a mistake from there on in,” said Ferree, who is married to golf professional Jim Ferree . “Qualifying for a USGA championship and having my son (15-year-old Randy ) caddie for me, that's a dream. I love this place,” she concluded, her voice trailing off through tears. The Women's Mid-Amateur is one of 13 national championships conducted annually by the United States Golf Association, 10 of which are strictly for amateurs.
