Marion Maney-McInerney

Marion Maney-McInerney, 29, of Dedham, Mass., parred the first extra hole to defeat Carol Semple Thompson and win the sixth U.S. Women's Mid-Amateur Championship at Old Marsh Golf Club, in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.

Maney-McInerney made a 25-foot par putt on the ninth hole to bring the final back to all square. The match seesawed over the next seven holes as Maney-McInerney birdied and won the 10th, 13th and 15th holes, bogeyed and lost Nos. 12 and 14, and Thompson took 11 with a birdie. (The finalists also halved the 16th with birdies.)

At the 19th hole, a par four, Maney-McInerney reached the green in two, some 30 feet from the hole, while Thompson's approach carried only to the fringe. Thompson chipped on but missed her 10-foot par putt; Maney-McInerney won with a two putt.

Robin Weiss, of Pam Beach, Fla., shot 69-73-142 to earn medalist honors. The 69 tied a Women's Mid-Amateur record, and the 142 was the best medalist score in the six-year history of the championship, surpassing by one stroke Andrea Dornin's mark set in 1991 at Desert Highlands Golf Club, in Scottsdale, Ariz.

Weiss defeated Ann Enstine, of Southampton, N.Y., in the opening round of match play, then fell in round two to Canadian Marlene Streit on the 20th hole.
