Meet The Quarterfinalists

Laura Coble of Augusta, Ga., has played in the Women’s Mid-Amateur 12 times and advanced as far as the quarterfinals…in sales and marketing of promotional products…husband is Rusty Coble and they have a daughter, Katherine, 15…member of the winning Georgia team in the 2005 USGA Women’s State Team Championship…six-time Georgia Women’s Amateur champion…2005 Women’s Southern Amateur champion…named Georgia Player of the Year and given the Tommy Barnes Award by Georgia State Golf Association in 2001, 2005…won the 2004 Georgia State Open…her only hole-in-one came in the Georgia Match Play championship in 2008…birth date: May 22, 1964.  

Wendi Golden, 34, of Sarasota, Fla., is a reinstated amateur who said she has the perfect name for Golden Hills Golf and Turf Club. She’s familiar with the layout, playing it a number of times. In August, she led all sectional qualifiers in the rain with a 74. No other competitor broke 80. … Reinstated as an amateur in 2006, Golden is a stay-at-home mom these days. She has two daughters, Jordan, 6, and Taylor, 5…attended the University of Tennessee…born in Atlanta, Ga…part of the Florida team that won the 2009 Georgia vs Florida…Won the 1996 Harder Hall Invitational…won four Georgia Women’s Amateur titles…won the Georgia Girls’ Junior in 1991 and ’92.

Virginia Derby Grimes of Meridian, Miss., won the 1998 U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur by birdieing the final four holes…also runner-up in 2004…a member of three victorious USA Curtis Cup teams, in 1998, 2000 and 2006…medalist in the 1997 U.S. Women’s Amatuer, where she advanced to the round of 16…semifinalist in the Women’s Mid-Amateur in 1995, 2005 and 2006…member of the winning Alabama team in the 1997 USGA Women’s State Team Championship…won the 1987 and 1996 Women’s Southern Amateur and three times a runner-up…Auburn Tiger Derby Invitational was named in her honor…inducted into the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame in 2004…member of the USGA Women’s Committee in 2003-04…1987 graduate of Auburn…married to Ben Grimes, M.D…birth date: Oct. 17, 1963.

Mina Hardin is a citizen of Mexico who lives in Fort Worth, Texas…played on the LPGA Tour as the first Mexican woman on the tour and finished as high as a tie for 27th…reinstated as an amateur in 1991…runner-up in the Women’s Mid-Amateur in 2001…five-time Women’s Texas Amateur champion…former Texas Women’s Open champion…co-medalist in this championship at 146, two over par, with a second round of 69, the only player to break 70 in stroke-play qualifying…husband is Gary Hardin…born Sept. 30, 1960.

Martha Leach of Hebron, Ky., has played in all but one of the 22 U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur Championships, has made the semifinals three times…in the U.S. Women’s Amateur, for which she has qualified 14 times, she has been a semifinalist once and made the quarterfinals twice…won the Bermuda Women’s Amateur in 1979 and the Women’s Texas Amateur in 1992…runner-up in the 1994 Women’s Texas Amateur…Shot a nine-hole score of six-under-par 30 two weeks ago…sister, Hollis Stacy, is the six-time USGA champion…works as substitute school teacher…graduated from the University of Georgia in 1983…has a grown daughter, Madison…husband, John Leach, is her caddie…born Dec. 21, 1961.

Christy Schultz of Rochester, N.Y., a sales representative…playing in her third Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship…husband is Chris Schultz, a college hockey coach…graduated from Purdue in 2002…sister, Karyn Rittenhouse, is her caddie…won New York Women’s Amateur in 2004, 2007, 2008…won 2009 New York Women’s Mid-Amateur…runner-up in New York Girls’ Junior in 1996 and ’97…won Rochester (N.Y.) Meghan Bolger Stasi of Oakland Park, Fla., is the 2006 and ’07 U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur champion…co-medalist in this championship with 36-hole score of 146…husband is Dan Stasi…her father, Mike Bolger, is her caddie…one of most memorable golf experiences was being paired with Laura Davies in 2009 U.S. Women’s Open…member of the victorious 2008 USA Curtis Cup team…has had three holes-in-one…graduated from Tulane University in 2000…former college golf coach…this is fourth U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur championship…born in New Jersey and moved to Florida after her marriage…birth date: May 30, 1978.

ARCHITECTS – Golden Hills Golf and Turf Club was designed by Charles Pace and Lee Popple and opened in 1964. The course was redesigned by Rees Jones in 2005.

THE USGA AND FLORIDA – The 2009 U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship will be the 17th USGA championship conducted in the state of Florida. It will be the seventh national women’s championship and the third U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur to be conducted in the state of Florida. In 1988, the championship was held at Amelia Island Plantation in Amelia Island, and in 1992 it was played at Old Marsh Golf Club in Palm Beach Gardens.
