Stasi, Ladden Lead Early Finishers In Second Round

Ocala, Fla. – On a balmy Sunday with the Golden Hills Golf and Turf Club course playing fast and firm, two-time champion Meghan Bolger Stasi, 31, of Oakland Park, Fla., and Laura Ladden, 35, of Coatsville, Pa., with 36-hole totals of 2-over-par 146, led early finishers in stroke-play qualifying

At the U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur, being played on the 6,173-yard, par-72 Rees Jones redesign,

Stasi matched her first-round 73 for the 2-over-par total. Stasi won this championship in 2006 and 2007 as Meghan Bolger. Ladden matched the low round thus far Sunday with a 1-under-par 71.

Stasi, who teed off on the back nine in the morning, bogeyed the par-4 10th hole, but rebounded with a birdie at the 145-yard, par-3 11th. Her second bogey on the back nine came at another par-3 hole, the 14th, and she turned in 1-over-par 38.

Stasi got out of the gate fast on the front nine when she birdied the 322-yard, par-4 first hole. Her bogey at the 522-yard fourth, a par-5, was her other lone variation from par and she finished at even-par 35 for the round of 73.

Ladden, a teacher in the West Chester Area School District, opened with two birdies, making 3s on the par-4 first and second holes.  A birdie at the 349-yard, par-4 seventh helped her to a front-nine 32. Ladden stumbled a bit coming in with bogeys at the par-4 13th and 17th holes but finished with a 71. Her score was matched only once in the morning, by Lisa Schlesinger of Laytonsville, Md., who stood at 7-over-par 151.

Two players in the afternoon wave will be racing to catch Stasi and Ladden for medalist honors. They are Wendi Golden, whose 71 led the field after 18 holes, and defending champion Joan Higgins, who opened the championship with a 74.

After the completion of 36 holes of stroke play, the field will be cut to the low 64 scorers, who’ll advance to match play beginning Monday. The championship concludes with a scheduled 18-hole final on Thursday.

The Women’s Mid-Amateur is one of 13 national championships conducted by the United States Golf Association. Ten are strictly for amateurs.
