Hardin, Stasi Win, Higgins Ousted In Second Round

Ocala, Fla. – Co-medalists Mina Hardin of Fort Worth, Texas, and Meghan Stasi of Oakland Park, Fla., advanced to the third round of match play Tuesday in the U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur at the 6,173-yard, par-72 Golden Hills Golf and Turf Club.

Hardin defeated Marilyn Hardy of Houston, Texas, in a closely-fought contest, 1 up. While Hardy never led, she fought back from a three-hole deficit after the 10th to even the match at the 16th. A bogey at the 17th proved fatal to her chances when Harden made a par and went 1 up.

Stasi defeated Jane Fitzgerald of Kensington, Md., 3 and 2. Stasi won the first hole and never trailed. She was 2 up at the turn. Her bogey on the par-4 10th hole was good enough to jump to a 3-up lead and she closed out the match when both players made par on the 16th.

Defending champion Joan Higgins of Glendora, Calif., lost to three-time champion Ellen Port of St. Louis, Mo.

Of the four medalists still in the field, two were defeated; Jennifer Lucas of Knoxville, Tenn., lost to Christy Schultz of Rochester, N.Y., 5 and 4. And Laura Ladden of Coatesville, Pa., was defeated by Robin Burke of Houston, Texas, 5 and 4.

Burke played the best golf of the morning’s second round. With the usual match-play concessions, Burke, the wife of former Masters champion Jack Burke Jr., was four under par. Burke recorded three birdies and eagled the par-5 12th hole against a lone bogey.

Two USGA Senior Women’s Amateur champions were sent to the sidelines. The 2009 champion, Sherry Herman of Farmingdale, N.J., suffered a narrow loss against Dawn Woodard of Greer, S.C., 1 up, when Herman drove into the rough on the par-4 18th hole, hit her approach short of the green and failed to get up and down. Woodard played the 18th down the center of the fairway, hit her approach to within 18 feet of the hole and two-putted to win.

The 2004 USGA Senior Women’s Amateur champion, Carolyn Creekmore, also lost. Creekmore was defeated, 1 up, by Lisa McGill of Philadelphia, Pa.
